Calendar of Events

Our objective is to bring you timely and relevant information on events, entertainment, the arts, and cultural activities on St. Simons and Jekyll Islands and the rest of Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia. We don’t include music, as the best source of information on music is at Bill Townsend’s site.

* Tuesday, May 22, 11 AM – Georgia Authors Book Discussion Series: Works of Carson McCullers. St. Simons Library, The Casino. For information, call 638-8234.

* Tuesday, May 22, 2 PM – Pre-school story time. St. Simons Island Library, the Casino. This occurs every Tuesday. For information, call 638-8234.

* Tuesday, May 22, Dinner 5:30, Program 7 PM – Civil War Round Table, Sea Palms Conference Center. The speaker will be Dr. Michael Chesson, founding professor at the American College of History and Legal Studies in Salem, New Hampshire. $25 per person. Members of the public are welcome. * Thursday through Saturday, May 24 through 26, Thursday 3 to 7 PM (for Guild members; you can join there), Friday 8:30 AM to 4 PM, Saturday, 8:30 AM to 3 PM – Book Sale, Casino Atrium. Literary Guild of St. Simons Island. Donate books at G.J. Ford Bookshop in the Shops at Sea Island (near Harris Teeter), or by calling 634-6277 or 638-3562 for larger donations.

* Friday through Sunday, May 25 through 27, Friday and Saturday 8 PM, Sunday 3 PM – “1940’s Radio Hour” presented by the Island Players at the Casino Theatre. This is the last weekend for this production. For information, call 638-0338.

* Saturday, May 26, 9 AM – Fort King George Canoe Excursion. Meet at the Fort in Darien. Canoe trip on the majestic Altamaha River. This trip will run from Miller Lake, down the Altamaha, and take out at Barrington Lake. Visitors will pass by historic bluffs, one of which was home to famous Georgian Mary Musgrove in the colonial era. The trip lasts approximately 4 hours and will involve guided natural and historical interpretation. Canoes, paddles, and life jackets are included. Visitors should bring their own snacks, sun-screen, and bug spray. $35. Reservations are required. For information and reservations, call 437-4770.

* Saturday, May 26, 9 AM to 5 PM – Glynn Art Market, a Mini-Art Festival in Glynn Art Association’s parking lot. Members of Glynn Art display and sell their art and fine crafts. Come by and you will surely find something special to take home or give as a gift.

* Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, 9 AM to 5 PM – St. Simons Island Antique Show, Postell Park. Free. Joe Burkhart Productions. For information, call 264-3254.

* Saturday, May 26, 10 AM – Behind-the-scenes tours of Hollybourne Cottage, the only Jekyll Cottage yet to be restored. Part of Historic Preservation Month. This is the last date for this tour. * Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, 10 AM to 5 PM – Annual Memorial Day Weekend Invitational Arts and Crafts Show, Postell Park. Sponsored by Pier Village Association.

* Sunday, May 27, 7 to 9 PM – Jazz in the Park. Phil Morrison and Michael Hulett play the opening show of the 2012 season of 5 outdoor concerts. $10 adults, $5 ages 6 to 12, under 6 free. * Monday, May 28 – Memorial Day. Set aside to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our nation and protect our freedoms.

* Monday, May 28, 10 AM to 4 PM – Memorial Day Commemorative Event, Fort King George, Darien. Musket and cannon firing demonstrations, colonial toys and games, family scavenger hunt, and geo-caching activity. Explore the Fort! Entrance fee from $3.75 to $6.50. For information, call 437-4770.

* Thursday, May 31, 5:30 to 7:30 PM – Basics of Food Preservation, presented by UGa Cooperative Extension, Room 113, 325 Old Jesup Road (Old Ballard School, just off Community Road near US 341). * Friday, June 1 – Atlantic Hurricane Season begins. Continues until November 30.

* Friday, June 1, 3 to 5 PM (Ribbon cutting at 4 PM) – Ribbon Cutting and Open House for Alzheimer’s of Glynn. 2803 Sherwood Drive, near the hospital. Free. See the new facility and consider volunteering. For information, call 264-0777.

* Friday, June 1, 5 to 8 PM – First Friday on Newcastle Street in Downtown Brunswick. Shops are open; refreshments; music. Meet your friends and make new ones. Several places have opening receptions for new exhibits, including Art Downtown, the Brunswick Library, and the Ritz Theatre. Hattie’s Books will usually host an author for a book signing. The “Jaguars Caravan” will also be in town, and includes music, cheerleaders and players signing autographs. The caravan bus will be parked on Gloucester Street at Grant. Gloucester from Newcastle to Grant will be closed to vehicles.

* Friday, June 1, 5:30 to 8 PM – First Friday Fun at the Library: Dream Big on the First Star You See Tonight. Tie-in with Summer Reading Program featuring models and items of interest dealing with night sky.  Telescopes to view stars after dark. Brunswick Glynn County Library, 208 Gloucester Street. * Monday through Friday, June 4 through 8, 9 AM to 4 PM each day – Basics of Filmmaking Camp at the Ritz. Young filmmakers ages 14 through 16 get hands-on experience creating their own short film. Students are welcome to bring personal laptops with video editing software. Bring own lunch; snacks and drinks provided. Public screening after last day of class. See website for costs. * Monday, June 4 – Full Moonrise at the Beach. Sunset is 8:27 PM and Moonrise is at 8:56. This is the Full Strawberry Moon. If conditions are good we will gather at the Coast Guard Beach, just to the left of the walkover. Doggies (on leashes) and libations welcomed.

* Tuesday, June 5, 10:30 AM – Story time and crafts for pre-school children at the Brunswick-Glynn County Library, 208 Gloucester Street. This event occurs each Tuesday. For information, call 267-9597.

* Tuesday, June 5, shows at 11 AM and 1, 2:30 and 6 PM – Planetarium Day at the Library.  Wonders of the night sky presented by the Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah. * Saturday, June 9, 3 PM – St. Simons Then and Now: Historical Drawings by Vincent McCollum  Talk by curator Dayna Caldwell featuring drawings by local artist depicting island life from early days to present. * Saturday, June 9 – Belmont Stakes, Saratoga, New York. Final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. I think the music selection is “Sidewalks of New York.”

* Sunday, June 10, 1 to 7 PM – Second Sunday at Gascoigne Park. Participating musicians and benefiting charity TBA. Free, but donations are welcomed. Bring your chair and refreshments. They usually have raffles and other activities.

Monday, June 11 through Sunday, June 17 (pink recycling week)
